Vikings QB Free Agency Watch 2018

The latest rumor du jour is that the Vikings are instead serious about pursuing top free-agent talent Kirk Cousins, who's likely to garner top dollar on the market come March 14.

Despite a breakout 2017 year, it has been clear from the start that the Vikings were not as high on Case Keenum as the team's success would suggest. He would also be a good fit in the Vikings run-heavy offense, as he was one of the top passers in play-action sets and for the first two months of the season, boasted a 152 QBR rating off play-action.

Cousins has also been linked to the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Denver Broncos. It makes sense; the franchise tag would mean $19.9 million for Keenum.

Cousins, who turns 30 in August, has thrown for more than 4,000 yards in each of the past three years, leading the league in completion percentage (69.8) in 2015 and making the Pro Bowl in 2016 after throwing for 4,917 yards. He never looked to be anything more than a reliable backup in his first five seasons, throwing almost as many interceptions as touchdown passes with a sub-80.0 passer rating.

The Minnesota Vikings have so many quarterbacks they don't know what to do.

There were rumors the Vikings were going to try and see if the National Football League would toll Bridgewater's contract due to the lost time from a non-contact injury.

This does not by any means rule out a return to Minnesota this year for the quarterback. The 29-year-old finished last season with 4,093 passing yards and 27 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. Let us look at Cousins to the Vikings. Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen give Minnesota one of the NFL's best receiving corps, and neither one is a candidate to be traded this offseason.

If the Vikings would rather make their long-term investment in the deep quarterback class entering the 2018 NFL Draft, McCarron could be a cheap Band-Aid for the developmental seasons of the rookie acquisition.

All of these are strong factors for Kirk Cousins in considering the Minnesota Vikings. There is no doubt some risk in signing Cousins, especially at the money he is looking for, but he may be the best option that is actually on the market.

On paper, at least, Minnesota is the best fit for a quarterback that wants to both win and get paid.
