Police respond to shots-fired report at California veterans' home

"We do have an active shooter situation with a hostage situation in Yountville", Highway Patrol Officer John Fransen told San Francisco Bay Area news station KTVU-TV.

SWAT teams, using cameras, tried to look in the window where the gunman was holding the three hostages.

"Law enforcement is at the Yountsville Veteran's Home right now following reports of gunfire", they posted on Twitter.

According to CHP Capt. Chris Childs, a hotline at 707-948-3331 was created for those who are concerned about the safety of friends and family at the Yountville Veterans Home.

CBS News reports that law enforcement officers are largely surrounding the hillside veterans' home. About 1,000 male and female disabled and elderly veterans from World War II and the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq live at the home, according to its website.

California Highway patrol said they were working with Napa County Sheriff's deputies to difuse the situation. Hillside Medevac helicopaters are standing by, and hostage negotiators have been trying to make contact with the gunman in the room he burst in Friday morning. The Pathway Home is a privately run program on the veteran home's grounds, in the wealthy Napa Valley town of Yountville.

Police evacuated the property and closed off nearby roads.

Armoured police cars, ambulances, three police helicopters and a number of fire engines were deployed to the scene.

Police closed access to the large veterans home in Yountville after a man with a gun was reported on the grounds.

"Police activity" was first reported in a police alert at 10:47 a.m. local time, with authorities advising the public avoid the area. "We will continue to update you as we get more information".

Local media reports a man wearing body armour and carrying an assault rifle entered the home.
