The win moves Arsenal to within 10 points of Tottenham, ahead of their match against Bournemouth later on Sunday.

"You can not be a footballer without pride, or any sportsman without pride", he said.

"I don't know how much negativity is out there, I focus on my job, I have shown in 22 years that I can do that and that I respect everybody's opinion but I focus on my job with total commitment".

Those who did turn up were treated to an early goal, with Mustafi heading home from a Mesut Ozil free-kick - Arsenal's 1000th home goal in the Premier League.

Although the official attendance was recorded as over 59,000 the pictures on TV suggested that hardly any Arsenal fans turned up to see their goalkeeper break the record.

"We had a very good first half", he said.

However, a penalty was conceded just after the goal when Roberto Pereyra was brought down.

Watford had a chance to pull one back but Troy Deeney's penalty was saved by Petr Cech, who secured the 200th Premier League clean sheet of his career.

On the hour mark, Mkhitaryan played a defence-splitting through ball for Aubameyang to round Karnezis and slot home. "It's quite fortunate that it's against Deeney!"

That made him the first goalkeeper to reach 200 clean sheets in England's top division and Wenger believes the Czech's situation over the last week provides a measure of Cech's "humility" and "intelligence".

"You don't last so long in the game if you're not intelligent".
