As per reports by PTI, Karti was produced in the court of Special Judge Sunil Rana, before whom CBI counsel V K Sharma moved an application for judicial custody of the senior Congress leader's son.

Karti's counsel has claimed that there is a threat to his client's life in Tihar Jail as the prison is populated by several terrorists and hardened criminals who had been convicted following investigations by various central agencies during the time when P Chidambaram was the Union home minister.

The Delhi court ordered the jail authorities to ensure that adequate security is provided to Karti Chidambaram until March 24. The CBI on Monday said that there were enough proofs against Karti and said it is absolutely necessary that the accused be remanded to the judicial custody.

The CBI has sought 15-day judicial custody of Karti who in turn has asked the court to hear his bail plea today itself instead of scheduled March 15.

Defence counsels Dayan Krishnan and Mohit Mathur told the court that Karti Chidambaram's father has dealt with various stringent penal laws such as TADA, MCOCA, Unlawful (Activities) Prevention Act and NDPS Act.

A futile last ditch effort was made by Karti Chidambaram on Monday when he cited grave threat to his safety and security in Tihar jail, by virtue of being the son of P. Chidambaram, former finance minister and sitting member of Rajya Sabha.

Trashing Karti's contention that he faces a threat in jail, the CBI argued that if the accused has been traveling overseas did not face any personal threat, then how is it possible that he would he face threat to his life inside a jail where there are tight security measures in place.

Indrani and Karti were confronted in Byculla prisons in Mumbai on March 4 in connection with the case of INX Media getting government approval for foreign direct investment after money changing hands. Mr Karti Chidambaram later moved the Delhi high court for bail. The CBI in the court said, "During the entire period of police custody remand, Karti Chidambaram was evasive and non-cooperative".

Meanwhile, Karti's chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman, who is now in jail in a case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), has moved the court for anticipatory bail in the CBI case of INX Media.

Karti was arrested by CBI on his return from the United Kingdom in connection with the FIR lodged on May 15 past year.

The CBI had initially alleged that Karti Chidambaram received Rs 10 lakh as a bribe for facilitating the FIPB clearance to INX Media.
