Alam is the son of former Araria MP Mohammad Taslimuddin, whose death in September last necessitated the bypoll.

This was the first electoral battle in the state since Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who also heads the JD (U), walked out of the alliance with the RJD and the Congress and joined the BJP-led NDA previous year.

The balloting in Jehanabad and Bhabua followed the death of RJD and BJP legislators respectively.

RJD president Lalu Prasad, now in jail following conviction in fodder scam cases, on Wednesday termed the victory of his party in Bihar bypolls as "victory of truth over falsehood".

The BJP also lost the Araria Lok Sabha constituency and the Jehanabad assembly seat while scoring a consolation win in Bhabhua assembly seat in Bihar.

In a matter of hours, Tejashwi became the leader of the opposition from the deputy chief minister.

Araria has formidable Muslim-Yadav electorate - 40% Muslims and 20% Yadavs - while Jehanabad is mainly Yadav-dominated.

Bihar bypolls are being seen as a litmus test for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after he pulled out of the state's Grand Alliance and joined the BJP.

Workers of SP and RJD celebrated across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by distributing candies and bursting firecrackers.

In Jehanabad, Suday Yadav of RJD defeated Janata Dal-United candidate Abhiram Sharma by 35,036 votes.

Prasad also thanked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee, who congratulated him on the "great victory", saying "Thank you, didi". Now, the JD (U) is in alliance with the BJP and has put up its candidate to take on the RJDs nominee.

Party leaders said Tejashwi had a foolproof strategy to reach out to his party's traditional voters in both the constituencies. By 8.50, Sarfaraz Alam took a lead of over 2,000 votes but soon the BJP's Pradeep Kumar Singh surged ahead. In Bhabhua, BJP's Rinki Rani Pandey defeated her Congress rival Shambhu Singh Patel by about 14,000 votes. This very ideology will destroy your arrogance. But the sympathy wave was not the solitary factor for giving ticket to Alam.

Bihar, where votes are being counted for one Lok Sabha constituency and two Lok Sabha seats, seems headed for a status quo.
