Congress on Monday nominated senior journalist Kumar Ketkar from Maharashtra and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated state women's commission president Vijaya Rahatkar's name for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls. Shah's pick for five other seats from Uttar Pradesh - eight one already taken by Arun Jaitley - is interesting.

Former Congress politician Narayan Rane is a BJP candidate, and at least two Congress members - his son Nitesh Rane and an old loyalist - are expected to vote for him. However, the fight will be between the third candidate of the Congress and JDS's Farooq.

The selection of Congress candidates, which has sprung a surprise, is being seen as AICC President Rahul Gandhi's assertive stand to back young leaders with a clean, non-controversial image.

If the senior party leaders are to be believed, after being included in the team of BJP National President, Saroj Pandey executed every responsibility given to her effectively. Former Union minister in the UPA-I Akhilesh Singh, who was earlier with the RJD but joined the Congress on the eve of 2009 Lok Sabha elections, submitted his nomination on the last day as the Congress nominee. At present the party wise strength in the assembly is Congress-122, BJP-43, JDS-37, BSR Congress-3, KJP-2, KMP-1, independents-8, Speaker-1, nominated-1, vacant-7.

After scrutiny of papers on Tuesday, all the six candidates are likely to be declared elected unopposed. However, it is said that Rathwa, hailing from Chhotaudepur, a tribal belt, was assured Rajya Sabha ticket during 2017 assembly elections.

The BSP has named former legislator Bhim Rao Ambedkar as its candidate while the SP has nominated actress-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan for the fourth time.

The ruling BJP in Gujarat would want to defeat the Congress for the setback it suffered after Ahmed Patel managed to win the Rajya Sabha seat in 2017.

The maximum number of candidates fielded by the Congress party are in Karnataka, with 3 nominations, namely Dalit poet L. Hanumanthaiah, Vokkalinga leader G.C. Chandrasekhar and Syed Naseer Hussain.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi is the party's candidate from West Bengal and he will win as the Trinamool Congress has made a decision to support him.
