"We have no personnel announcements at this time", she added.

One focal point for Trump has been McCabe's wife's political connections to allies of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Communications from the inspector general's office regarding McCabe prompted a disciplinary review from the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility, which, in turn, recommended that McCabe be fired. Sessions is reviewing that recommendation and can give it the final approval or step in to stop the process. The Justice Department said no formal decision has been made on McCabe's fate.

McCabe stepped down from his position at the end of January, although he remains on the department's payroll pending his scheduled retirement after 21 years with the department on Sunday.

A source at the time told Fox News that McCabe is taking "terminal leave" - effectively taking vacation until he reaches his planned retirement in a matter of weeks.

Republicans, including Trump campaign surrogates, have suggested that Ms Clinton traded donations to the Clinton Foundation for influence.

"McCabe is ensnared in an internal review that includes an examination of his decision in 2016 to allow F.B.I. officials to speak with reporters about an investigation into the Clinton Foundation", the Times reports.

The inspector general has since last January been investigating the FBI and Justice Department's handling of the politically charged probe into Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, which is separate from the foundation probe. McCabe reportedly maintains he didn't intend to mislead investigators.

Trump: 'Hillary Clinton lied many times to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In reality, the FBI's actions ahead of the election indisputably harmed Clinton.

But their decision to issue a separate report focusing exclusively on McCabe is somewhat unusual, and has enabled Sessions to take disciplinary action before McCabe's retirement date, if he chooses. If the Justice Department does not move on the recommendation, conservatives might view officials there as unfairly protecting McCabe.

The inspector general's finding sparked an Federal Bureau of Investigation disciplinary process that recommended his firing, something Sessions can accept or reverse, the paper said.

Through a representative, McCabe declined to comment. DOJ's inspector general is conducting a broader investigation of the FBI's handling of the Clinton probe that is expected to examine Comey's actions.

McCabe and his attorney recently signed nondisclosure agreements that allowed them to read the results of the investigation but banned them from discussing its contents.
