Djokovic's performance in the final set against the world's 109th-ranked player on center court raised some eyebrows, with four-times grand slam champion Jim Courier saying the Serb had "capitulated".

"I just wanted to go out and see".

The 30-year-old crashed out of the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 of the calendar year following his defeat at the hands of Taro Daniel.

Federer and 10th seed Djokovic both came into the tournament seeking to become the first six-time victor of the event.

World number one Roger Federer needed less than an hour to dispatch Filip Krajinovic at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in California on Monday.

"Very weird - I just completely lost rhythm", Djokovic said.

Djokovic bowed out to South Korean Chung Hyeon in the fourth round of the 2018 Australian Open.

There was no let up from Federer in the second set.

NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Notebook: Virginia's Hunter out for NCAA Tournament
The guard from Philadelphia played just under 20 minutes a game and shot 48.8 percent from the field and 38.2 percent from three. A fast-rising National Basketball Association prospect, Hunter was also starting to flash an efficient three-point stroke, too.

Krajinovic dug deep early, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to level things up but it was one-way traffic from that point as Federer hurried to a one-set lead in the next four games - winning three of them to love.

Federer said he understands well how even a champion like Djokovic could be struggling to find his game so soon after having surgery. "When Marta Kostyuk got to the third round, you say, "I can do that, too.' But it's also cool that I'm playing here in the same tournament as Venus and Serena.

It's been a long time since I have been interrupted at night and have to come back the next day".

"It is still early stages for Novak coming back and the first one after surgery". Daniel went up 4-1 in the tiebreak before Djokovic got the minibreak back.

Jack Sock, David Ferrer, Marin Cilic were also winners along with Gael Monfils who edged John Isner and Milos Raonic who ended the run of Canadian countryman Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-4.

For Daniel, this counts as the biggest win of his career and takes him into a third round meeting with Argentina's Leonardo Mayer, who defeated lucky loser Ruben Bemelmans, a late replacement for Kei Nishikori (withdrew with an illness) on Sunday.

Federer staved off a set point in the tiebreak to beat Delbonis 6-3 7-6 (6).
