Trump's comments might have drawn quips referring to fictional, intergalactic fights, but some military leaders and lawmakers took the president's pitch seriously. Police stepped in to diffuse the situation. But it seems like Trump is trying to resurrect an idea that his administration originally didn't want. She was among a group of protesters who chanted "Say it now, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here".

Trump supporters were euphoric that the president was finally visiting the Golden State and hoped he would stop to see them.

The president will also attend a Republican National Committee fundraiser in the Beverly Hills or Bel Air area Tuesday night.

Los Angeles is the second stop of Trump's maiden visit Tuesday to the state as president.

Since his campaign, Trump's promise of a "beautiful and massive" wall paid for by Mexico has become a punchline for his critics. Trump is scheduled to fly to Missouri Wednesday morning, and there were reports of street closures and police staging in the vicinity of the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown Hotel near Wilshire Boulevard and Figueroa Street.

"My new national strategy for space recognises that space is a war-fighting domain, just like the land, air and sea", Trump said.

The commander-in-chief doesn't think the USA military is large enough - so he announced during a freaky press conference Tuesday that it will expand beyond planet Earth via a "space force".

Given the U.S. president's past flippant statements, there has been no official documentation or statement actually confirming plans to create a so-called space force, but members of the government had suggested in June previous year that the air force should be split in two: one for Earth, another for space activities.

The president is now promising to cement USA leadership in exploration of the final frontier exploration he says would not have been possible under a different president.

Last week, Trump spoke of a special future United States mission to Mars. Also known as Space Marines. The Air Force is already intimately involved with spaceflight, a fact that members of his military audience probably already knew during the rally. So far, Trump's Pentagon officials have said they don't support such a reorganization. Trump adds: "We'll see whether or not it happens".
