Stephen Hawking, 1942-2018, Persevered After ALS Diagnosis at Age 21

One of the galaxy's brightest minds, physicist Stephen Hawking, has died at age 76 and tributes have come in from all corners of the globe. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.

In the video, he explains that he will "forever miss" the professor, and thanks him for his contribution to science.

West Sussex astronaut Tim Peake has joined leading scientists, entertainers and public figures in paying tribute to Professor Stephen Hawking.

The celebrated English physicist had attained nearly a cult-like status in recent years.

Prime Minister Theresa May said Dr Hawking was "a brilliant and extraordinary mind - one of the great scientists of his generation" whose "courage, humor and determination to get the most from life was an inspiration", the BBC reported.

"Beloved" Hawking, as described by his sons, was an outspoken commentator on life back on earth, voicing his disapproval in recent years of both the election of Donald Trump in the United States and Britain's vote to leave the European Union.

"It wasn't easy [for young researchers] to slip out to the pub when the light was still on in his room", he said.

'I didn't fancy the thought of being handed over to the Inquisition like Galileo, ' Hawking quipped.

Hawking was the best-known theoretical physicist of his time. In 2013, Hawking boycotted the Israel Presidential Conference.

In an interview with Reuters in 2007, Hawking said "I believe the universe is governed by the laws of science", and that 'the laws may have been decreed by God, but God does not intervene to break the laws'.
