Dennis Alexander was teaching a gun safety lesson for his administration of justice class at Seaside high school, near Monterey in northern California, on Tuesday.

Carrying a weapon on a school campus without authorization (which Alexander doesn't have) is illegal in California. At the same time, bullet fragments ricocheted off the ceiling and hit one 17-year-old student in the neck, resulting in what police described as moderate injuries. Three students were injured, none seriously.

"It was determined that there was no immediate threat to students or staff, and school remained in session", the district said in a statement.

Gonzales said Tuesday's incident changed his views about President Donald Trump's recent proposal to arm teachers.

"I think a lot of questions are on parents' minds are, why a teacher would be pointing a loaded firearm at the ceiling in front of students", Diffenbaugh told KSBW.

Police said the teacher - who serves as a reserve police officer for Sandy City and a Seaside city councilman - last had a gun safety training "a little less than a year ago".

"Best practice is you don't take live firearms into a classroom", Chief Pridgen told CBS. Alexander is also a reserve police officer in nearby Sand City on Monterey Bay. A letter has been sent to Seaside High School parents and I've included a screenshot of that letter below.

It was not clear if the he was placed on a paid or unpaid leave.

This isn't the first teacher-caused gunfire in the classroom in recent weeks.

I wish that this would end of any talk of arming teachers.

Some of those fragments ended up in his neck.

Students who survived the shooting have become vocal advocates for gun control, demanding that lawmakers take action to keep their schools safe.

Experts attribute this decline to a combination of factors, such as gun safety education programs, state laws regulating gun storage and a decline in the number of households that own guns.
