Officials from the Lake-Lehman Junior-Senior High School did not respond to phone calls regarding its students' participation in the national protest.

Students filed out of class for a 17-minute demonstration to honor those killed and injured in Parkland, Florida.

Justin Blackman, 16, was the only student to walk out of his school in Wilson Preparatory Academy in support of the movement. Sammy Eckstut, the aunt of one the students said, "It's people with guns that kill people".

"So many of them worry about their safety, and this was a good way for them to address it, bring it to light and also come together", she said.

Districts in Sayreville, New Jersey, and Maryland's Harford County drew criticism this week when they said students could face punishment for leaving class.

"The school system can't single out students' political speech for harsher punishment than it would any other student conduct", Sonia Kumar, an ACLU staff attorney, told the Guardian. "I think the message should be: We don't want to take away guns; we want to take guns away from insane people".

More than 3,000 walkouts were planned across the US and around the world, organizers said.

About 200 students took part in the walkout at Howell High School, while Brighton Area Schools designated gymnasiums at each building as a safe and secure place for students to gather. "We were here to ensure it was done safely and in a respectful manner", said Houghton High School Principal Cole Klein.

"I think it's important for students to have a means to peacefully protest against something they really believe in", said senior Ashley Burley.

At the end of the 17 minutes the students converged from their semi-circle for a big group hug.

"This is our first step in trying to make a change and keep showing initiative and keep doing things", said Kahlil Darden, president of the Black Student Union at the high school.

The media organizations said the public had a right to see the videos under Florida's public record law. He told the Journal that students who participated will not be marked absent for the time of the rally and will be able to make up any missed assignments. In California, students at Mt. Diablo High School broke through a gate to leave the campus.
