The Oakland Raiders have traded wide receiver/return man Cordarrelle Patterson to the New England Patriots, according to Pardon My Take and confirmed by Chat Sports.

He caught 31 passes for 309 yards in his first year with the Raiders while adding 13 carries for 121 yards and two scores on the ground.

He has one year and $3.25 million left on his contract.

For Patterson, there likely was little room in an system that will require precise route depths such as Gruden's, as he has remained a disappointment in that department since being selected No. 29 overall by the Vikings in 2013. New England's fifth round draft pick has moved hands multiple times already after the Patriots acquired it from the Browns for Danny Shelton, who acquired the pick from Kansas City for Cameron Erving. He has 153 career kick returns for 4,613 yards with five touchdowns.

As a kickoff returner, however, he's been one of the NFL's best. Oakland now owns five picks in the sixth round of April's draft.

He has scored in double figures in 18 consecutive games and had 18 (on 7 of 12 shooting) against Butler in the first game. The Bearcats were ranked No. 1 in the nation when Kenyon Martin broke his leg during the Conference USA Tournament.

Meanwhile, Patterson's average is the best in the NFL since he entered the league among players with at least 20 returns.

"Patterson - he plays in the backfield, he plays in the receiver positions", Belichick said.

In 2014, Belichick was asked about Patterson's ability in the return game. The Vikings in turn used that selection on Patterson.

Patterson is a 6-foot-2, 216 pound wide receiver that has been excellent as a kick returner in the NFL.
