Google: Android Wear gets new name

Other than for cosmetic branding and marketing purposes, one of the key reasons behind the change in name is the fact that in 2017 Google claims that a third of new Android Wear watch owners also use an iPhone, thus making the "Android" part of the name somewhat misleading.

Notably, in the Android P Developer Preview 1, Google is warning users when it spots an old app, and returning the message, "This app was built for an older version of Android and may not work properly". Apps targeting lower API levels will fail to install and run on this version of the OS.

The first Android P Developer Preview shows a warning when old apps are opened, as seen in the video above. According to the report, with Android P, developers will have to target a minimum API level of 17, which is equivalent to Android 4.2. "Try checking for updates, or contact the developer". It's as if they want a fragmented market of confusing Android programs instead of any sort of unity.

Introducing Google Play Instant, a faster way to try apps and games
Android P , the next version of Google's mobile operating system, will seemingly block apps built for Android 4.1 and lower. It may be possible to store the data in RAM on some higher end devices, but none of the now available Instant games do so.

Google said the new name will begin to display on watches and phone app over the next few weeks.

New security features were also added to Android Oreo which made it safer to download apps, dropped insecure network protocols and provided more control over identifiers. The technology works by automatically scanning Android devices at least once a day and removing any PHAs on them.

It was in December that Google announced it will take a cue from Apple and require the Play Store apps to stick to an API level requirement of no more than one year older than current codename release. The move possibly comes as Google is looking to improve the security features with Android P, which the firm is also doing by blocking idle apps from accessing your smartphones' camera and mic. Apple has already blocked all 32-bit apps from running on the latest iPhone 8 and iPhone X devices. Some old apps, despite being functional, may contain security vulnerabilities.
