Renee Zellweger Transforms as Judy Garland; Biopic Filming Launches

Judy, set in London and filmed on location, will focus on Garland's final year, starting in December 1968, when Garland had a residency of concerts at London's Talk of the Town nightclub.

Renée Zellweger has gone through a complete transformation for the upcoming biopic about Judy Garland! The script, by The Crown scribe Tom Edge, will center on Garland's 1968 concerts in London.

Also starring in the film are Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, and Michael Gambon. JUDY is directed by Tony nominee and two times Olivier victor Rupert Goold (King Charles III).

The photo, released Monday to mark the start of principal photography, shows Zellweger dressed in a floral embellished gown and a microphone in her hand. Studio honchos released the first photo of Zellweger in character over Twitter. Some of Garland's most beloved songs will be featured in the movie, including "Over the Rainbow".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zellweger portrays Garland as exhausted and fragile, missing her children and getting into a new romance with Mickey Dean, who would be her fifth husband.

She'd struggled with drug and alcohol addictions for years, went broke and was strung out on barbiturates when she died of an overdose at the age of 47.

The film also delves into Garland's behind-the-scenes battles with management, her relationships with musicians and fans, and the unfolding family drama that provided the backdrop to the London performances.

Zellweger won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the 2003 film "Cold Mountain".
