While Hurriyat insiders stated that Geelani resigned citing health concerns, sources said that the ailing separatist was under tremendous pressure after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) tightened the noose around his family members.

There were many contenders, including his son Naeem Geelani, Democratic Freedom Party head Shabir Shah and Muslim League chairman Masarat Alam, who were tipped to succeed Mr. Geelani as the TeH's chairman.

In a significant development, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, a close confidante of Kashmir's separatist patriarch Syed Ali Shah Geelani, on Monday replaced him as the chief of Tehrik-e-Hurriyat (TeH). "I extend my fullest cooperation and honest wishes to the would-be leadership of the organization", Geelani, as per the TeH statement said. "Sehrai will take over as the interim Chairman till the elections are held later this year", a spokesman of the party said.

Geelani told the Shoora today that holding a position without contributing was an injustice, sources said. "So, today I willfully step-down from the chairmanship and advise the shoora to arrange an alternative at the earliest", he said. Tehreek-e-Hurriyat is a separatist organisation of Jammu and Kashmir founded on August 7, 2014. Till now, Sehrai worked as the general secretary of the party. When 1987 elections were announced, Sehrai was at his home in Kupwara.

"Sehrai played an important role in the formation of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat".
