Shooter dead, 2 students hurt in Maryland high school

Two witnesses, who do not attend the school, told WUSA9's Mike Valerio that they were on a school bus leaving the high school parking lot when they saw students just running out of the building. He fired a round at the shooter, who also fired a round at the same time, Cameron said.

One student died and two were critically injured after an armed student opened fire in the hallway of the Great Mills High School in the USA state of Maryland, St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said. He was confirmed deceased at 10:41 a.m. ET after being taken to a hospital.

School resource officer Blaine Gaskill responded to the scene in less than a minute, the sheriff said. He said that the investigation would determine whether single round the officer fired hit the shooter.

The shooting, which came amid a renewed national debate over gun violence following a school massacre in Florida last month, occurred just before 8 a.m. local time at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County, county Sheriff Timothy Cameron said.

Witnesses to the shooting are being questioned at a secured area in the high school, the sheriff said. The suspect was injured and has since died at a hospital, police said.

The Maryland school is in Great Mills, a community about 110 km south of Washington.

Agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined deputies at Great Mills High School as students endured a lengthy lockdown, cowering inside classrooms and a locker room while officers worked to make sure there were no more threats on campus.

The Baltimore Sun reported that a student said the shooting happened around 8am.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., whose district includes St. Mary's County, canceled his usual weekly briefing on Capitol Hill to go to the county to meet with parents at a center close to the Leonardtown High School.

Several students from Stoneman Douglas tweeted about the Great Mills school shooting on Tuesday, offering their thoughts and calling for an end to gun violence in schools.

"First aid was immediately initiated, to include a tourniquet on the shooter and CPR", Cameron said.
