First deliveries in the United Kingdom will begin in August.

The Competition represents a comprehensive reworking of the BMW M2 package, boosting the power of its twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre engine to 404bhp.

And the biggest change is, of course, the engine, a much more powerful unit than the outgoing N55.

BMW will soon announce the pricing details but the auto is expected to cost at starting a fair bit above the $54,500 base price of the standard M2.

As for the top speed, it amounts to 174 miles per hour.

Subtle, understated looks are not high on the Competition's agenda. All the M2's openings, including the trademark kidney grilles, have been made larger and more aggressive looking in order to increase airflow. There's also the usual M badging and extra trim, including M2 Competition badging along the door sills. That shiny black finish has been applied to the side gills, while all-new 19-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels feature, also available in black.

BMW has unveiled a hotter version of its baby M vehicle, the M2 Competition.

There are some unusual calls in the PFA Team of the Year

Only cars with the optional M DCT double-clutch gearbox are claimed to hit 62mph from rest in 4.2, seconds; those with the standard six-speed manual take 4.4 seconds.

Top speed is governed to 250km/h, but the limiter can be raised to 280 km/h with the optional M Driver´s Package. Drive gets sent to the rear wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission with a new carbon fibre friction lining for improved shift lining, and as before there's a rev-matching function that can be deactivated by switching off the stability control system. If you like to tinker with your car's settings, though, the M DCT will be for you.

The differential has also been upgraded with new software that, Häcker said, has allowed vital changes to the DSC system via a new MDM (M Dynamic Mode) activated in the Sport+ driving mode.

More useful, there are now dedicated selector switches on the dashboard for various engine and steering characteristics.

The Competition's stability control has been recalibrated to allow greater driver freedom than before - M Dynamic mode allows more wheelspin for drifting and powersliding on track.

Of course, an excellent blend of technology and comfort are added to the cabin of the M2 Competition. The brakes are the M Group's own, with bigger rotors front and rear, gripped by bigger calipers-six pistons front, four rear. The seat and the backrest come with black leather upholstery with design perforations which is available in blue or orange. The silver is an M2 Competition exclusive color. Various driver assistive technologies are also included, such as forward collision warning, pedestrian warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and parking distance controls.
