Haspel Not Withdrawing Nomination as CIA Director — NBC's Bash

"President Trump's pick to run the C.I.A., Gina Haspel, told White House officials last week that she would withdraw her nomination if they were concerned her role in the brutal interrogation of a Qaeda suspect would scuttle her confirmation and draw the intelligence agency into a fresh controversy over a program it disavowed years ago, according to administration officials and others familiar with the discussions".

Democrats say she should be disqualified because she was the chief of base at a covert detention site in Thailand where two terrorism suspects were subjected to waterboarding, a technique that simulates drowning. She served nearly entirely undercover and much of her record is classified.

In order to become the first female to lead the foreign intelligence service, she needs support of the Republicans, who hold a slim 51-49 majority in the US Senate. Jackson no longer works as Trump's personal physician but remains in the White House Medical Unit.

"The takeaway for every United States Senator", commented Faiz Shakir, the ACLU's national political director, "should be that they need a lot more information about Haspel than they're now getting".

A career veteran of the agency, Ms. Haspel told White House officials that she was anxious less about her own reputation than about the potential damage to the C.I.A. from a bruising confirmation battle.

"There has been a fascinating phenomenon over the last few weeks".

Haspel's confirmation hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Earlier the White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders also -a bit overzealously- dashed to defend Trump's nominee, facing harsh criticism for playing the feminist and women's empowerment card way too openly.

Short, the White House legislative affairs director, told Haspel she could still be confirmed despite the information that had recently come to attention of the White House - and the administration expected some Democrats to support her, officials said. By Saturday she had reportedly agreed to continue with the nomination. "When the American people finally have a chance to see the true Gina Haspel on Wednesday, they will understand why she is so admired and why she is and will be a great leader for this Agency".
