Internet services suspended in Aligarh

Aligarh's District Magistrate Chandra Bhushan Singh told Janta Ka Reporter that the action was taken in light of social media rumours on Md Ali Jinnah.

In Aligarh District, Internet services were suspended on today in the wake of controversy in AMU after the Jinnah portrait row.

According to a report, scores of student protesters of the university along with 13 police officials were injured in a clash between the victims and the Hindu groups who were protesting outside the university premises on May 2, 2018.

They are boycotting classes for the next two days.

An Islamic organisation questioned on Saturday the rationale behind the demand of some right-wing activists for removing a portrait of Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah from the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The students offered Friday prayers at the scene of the dharna in which a large number of teachers and other members of the AMU fraternity participated. AMU student union leaders said students from the university marching to a local police station to register a complaint were caned by police. They also highlighted the recent news that Hindu students at AMU protected their Muslim co-students while the latter were doing namaz underlining the secular approach of the students which the fascist RSS seeks to undermine.

However, the move has now led to massive protests in AMU, with students asking why the portrait had become an eye-sore all of a sudden.

They said members of certain outfits entered the campus and disrupted the peaceful academic environment there.

The incident had also come just hours after BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy shared an article titled 'Somebody needs to teach AMU a lesson. It was the University security staff who finally confronted and over powered the goons when they were moving towards the guest house where Mr. Hamid Ansari was sitting, totally oblivious of what was going on outside.
