Measles Symptoms, Risk Factors: Possible Exposure Reported From Western New York

The New York State Department of Health announced today that an global traveler from Europe who has been confirmed to have measles visited multiple venues in New York State potentially exposing others to measles on April 30th, May 1st, and May 2nd.

Ontario Travel Plaza on Thruway (I-90) in Le Roy, Genesee County, between 4 and 6:30 p.m. April 30.

Old Country Buffet, 821 Country Route 64, Elmira, NY on April 30 between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m EDT.

These times reflect when the infected person was in these areas and the two-hour period afterward, when the virus can remain alive in the air and on surfaces.

Health care providers should report all suspected cases of measles to their local health department. Fresno County residents who were in the above mentioned locations during the time frames and show any signs of measles, should stay at home, verify their immunization status, then contact their health care provider by telephone for instructions.

"This traveler was diagnosed with measles, which can be highly contagious", Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said.

The Health Department says symptoms usually start to appear one to three weeks after infection. If you ere born before 1957, have received two doses of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, have had measles disease, or have a lab test confirming immunity, you are considered immune to or protected from measles. You may receive vaccination or medicine (known as immune globulin) to reduce the chances of developing measles.

The best prevention measure for measles is to get vaccinated.
