Pakistan's interior minister Iqbal survives assassination attempt

Jam Sajjad Hussain, a rescue services spokesperson, said that Iqbal was getting into his vehicle to leave the rally when a "young man" fired at him "several times". He said the attacker was stopped from firing the second shot.

Imran Kishwar told DawnNewsTV that Iqbal was shot by the assailant ─ who was also present at the corner meeting in Narowal area of Punjab ─ with a 30-bore pistol from a distance of 20 yards. Abid is reportedly a resident of Narowal. According to media reports, the interior minister is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Lahore.

"The minister luckily survived".

Marriyum said the institutions which were accused of stealing mandate should take notice of the accusations of Imran Khan.

MNA Pervaiz Malik termed the incident fortunate.

The injury is not life-threatening.

Governor Sindh Mohammad Zubair said the cowardice attack could not scare the government.

Iqbal "was targeted", his aide Asim Khan told AFP, confirming that the attacker has been arrested.

Had the assassination attempt on Iqbal succeeded, it would not have been the first political killing linked to blasphemy: in 2011 then-Punjab governor Salman Taseer, a liberal who had called for reformation of the laws, was gunned down by his own bodyguard in broad daylight in Islamabad. What message we wanted to give to the world, he questioned.

It follows a series of blows to the PML-N, which has been struggling to find its footing since its eponymous leader Nawaz Sharif was ousted by the Supreme Court over graft allegations last summer.

"Strongly condemn the assassination attempt on my friend Ahsan Iqbal..." Thoughts and prayers are with Ahsan Iqbal.

The minister said the current government had checked terrorism in its tracks, adding that the previous government also acted against this menace.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa condemned the attack.

The attack on the interior minister highlights the issue of security of high-profile politicians ahead of the election scheduled to be held after June.

Opposition leader in National Assembly Khursheed Shah condemned the incident. We pray for his early recovery and health.
