Wal mart will accompany state laws for people which require opioid prescriptions to be filled for over seven weeks.

Walmart Inc. says it will take more steps to reduce opioid medication abuse and misuse.

On May 7, Walmart and Sam's Club announced plans to restrict acute opioid prescriptions to a seven-day supply. The company will also begin limiting the dosage to 50 morphine milligram equivalents or MME's per day.

"I applaud Walmart's decision to proactively implement policies that will change the way they prescribe opioids and improve their prescription verification system", Manchin said.

"We are taking action in the fight against the nation's opioid epidemic", said Marybeth Hays, an executive vice president with Walmart U.S. This policy is in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidelines for opioid use. The seven day supply will apply to all new patients receiving a first-time script of opioids meant to treat acute pain conditions, USA Today reported.

The opioid situation is getting worse, with the drug now killing more people than breast cancer and guns.

As stated by the CDC, approximately 115 Americans die every day in an opioid overdose. Overdose deaths increased across all demogrpahics. Opioids, for example heroin and prescriptions, killed 42,000 men and women in the 2016 - that the greatest on file. Deaths attributed to synthetic opioids more than doubled past year.

Many medical professionals are concerned that such limits could be arbitrary and prevent a doctor from addressing the individual needs of each patient. Walmart continues to be a leader in sustainability, corporate philanthropy and employment opportunity. Several other companies have also been making similar efforts to help mitigate the opioid epidemic.
