"I don't think it's going to happen", said Guardiola.

"The Premier League is the toughest in the world and I hope they are going to respond to the challenge because next season is going to be tougher", he added.

"I said it last season and this season many times and I say it today".

The 23-year-old is now enjoying his most prolific goalscoring season as a top-flight footballer, having registered 23 goals while creating a further 12 across 45 matches in all competitions, and Guardiola has made his feelings about his long-term future clear.

"That is why I say it is not going to happen".

However, the Argentine remained at the club and profited from the mid-season injury of the Brazilian, netting 30 goals in 39 games across all competitions.

Pep Guardiola said: "The club, the chairman [Khaldoon al-Mubarak] and myself want him to stay a long time, renew his contract but we are going on holiday in a few days".

The 23-year-old has reportedly chose to delay talks over a new contract with City until after the World Cup. "My desire is it will not happen, but I don't know", said Guardiola of Atletico's reported interest.
