Over 40 flights diverted from Delhi due to dust storm

" A Vistara's Srinagar-Delhi flight was diverted to Amritsar and its Lucknow-Delhi flight was sent to Lucknow due to the inclement weather and other flights alos been diverted", a DIAL official confirmed.

Gusty winds with speed of 109 kmph and squall disrupted traffic in the city, even as flights were diverted from the Delhi airport between 4:30-6:30 pm and metro services were also hampered.

The airlines informed the passengers about the delays and diversions on Twitter.

In Faridabad, more than 100 trees and 40 electric poles were uprooted, and over 10 people were injured in the storm.

While seven persons were killed in Srikakulam district alone, two more were killed in Kadapa, officials said.

Worldwide flights from Katmandu, Riyadh, Colombo, Jeddah, Kabul were delayed even as flights from Tokyo, Newark and Colombo were diverted to other places, the sources said.

Clear skies and low wind speeds before Sunday had led to temperatures in the 40-43 degrees Celsius range last week, said Kuldeep Srivastava, a senior scientist with the regional meteorological office in Delhi.

Humidity during the morning hours was recorded at 60 per cent, the official added.

Mahesh Palawat, Director of the private weather forecast agency Skymet, told IANS that the change in weather was due to western disturbance which reached Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Saturday evening.

In its forecast, the department said rain and thunderstorm are very likely at a few places over western Uttar Pradesh and at many places over eastern parts of the state.

According to the IMD advisory, heavy rain is "very likely" at isolated places in Karnataka, Lakshadweep and Kerala.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has reportedly said that the Blue Line operations were being terminated as an overhead equipment cable on Blue Line was cut off after a tree fell on it during the storm.

There were minor disruptions in power supply in Wazirpur and Bawana areas, but it was restored immediately, TPDDL said. Metros going towards Dwarka were also affected.

Normal services on this section was restored at 7:37 pm, it said.

Operations at the Delhi airport came to a halt due to the dust storm.
