In March, after it became widely known that the information of tens of millions of Facebook users had been accessed without their permission by political data consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, Cook criticized ad-based Facebook's business model.

"If you can say, 'we do not take your data, ' there are going to be people who say they feel more comfortable going to Apple than Facebook", Cramer said.

The comment echoed Cook's earlier criticism of Facebook, which has endured months of criticism after it was revealed that a political data analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica, was able to harvest data for almost 90 million Facebook users. So we choose a different path: "collecting as little of your data as possible, and being thoughtful and respectful when it's in our care". Without naming names, Cook was clearly making a reference to the recent privacy scandal that has rocked Facebook and, by extension, the rest of the tech industry. "I wouldn't be in this situation", Cook said during a town hall discussion back in March.

"The truth is, we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer - if our customer was our product", he said.

Speaking at his alma mater Sunday morning, Cook told the Duke students technology has made today "the best time in history to be alive", despite wide divides in society.

After that, Apple committed to increased transparency, and the company encrypted iPhones to make it more hard for anyone - even authorities - to get their hands on data. "And no generation has had a chance to change things faster than yours can".
