Marchessault-led Golden Knights top Jets, 3-1, in Game 2

The Jets-Knights matchup is a fairy tale matchup, with Vegas formed only a year ago, its roster assembled from castoffs by other clubs in an expansion draft plus off-season moves by general manager George McPhee. He would be a wealthier man if he went to, well, Vegas to play his hunch like Pete Rose. When asked if Perron will play in Game 3, Gallant said: "I'm sure he will". I don't think anyone expected anything different. "I think he'll be fine.".

Yet, prepare as they may, there was little magic the Jets had up their sleeve to solve it.

When Connor redeemed himself by banking a sharp-angle shot through Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury to give the Jets some hope, down 2-1 at 7:17 of the third period, Marchessault counter-punched and easily sent Hellebuyck the wrong way to finish a two-on-one with Smith at 8:45.

"There was about 57 minutes of that game that was pretty good for us".

They didn't handle it well.

The Jets fell behind 2-0 in the first period and they were never able to recover. No better place to watch game 3 in Kelowna.

"If you're going to go out there and talk to the media, and say the team has to be better, then you need to lead by example", Marchessault said.

"We were on them", Golden Knights forward Erik Haula said.

The lesson is, continue to bet against the Knights at your own peril.

"I just think when good teams have a lead they keep their foot on the gas, they want the next goal", he said. Game 5 will be back in Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon. The whiteout crowd was silenced in the first period though, as the Vegas Knights put two pucks into the net in the first period (and two more past Connor Hellebuyck that rang iron).

Tatar did have 34 points (20 goals, 14 assists) in 82 combined games for the Golden Knights and Red Wings during the regular season. "I tried to do that". "They aren't going to roll over for us, they're going to come back with a great game".

That isn't a recipe for success. "It didn't hold but it didn't cost us, but certainly there's a 10 minute block there we're not going to like very much tomorrow". "The one that cost us I think is that we pushed too early, got out of our routes too early". Many were one and done. Connor Hellebuyck had 25 saves for the Jets. Jets captain Blake Wheeler said. "We got a couple of posts on us and we were not right". They could have scored four goals in three minutes. "It's just a matter of how you react to it".

The Jets have reacted well all season.

But their Stanley Cup aspirations may be determined by how they react to this latest blow. In fact, the final four is made up of teams that all finished in the top six overall in the league. "We like where it was in the Nashville series".

Coming off a series full of fits and starts, the Jets could not count on carrying any momentum into Monday night.
