More pain at the pump: Gas prices continue to climb statewide

About 2.2 million Floridians - about 6 percent more than a year ago - are expected to travel on Memorial Day weekend, which kicks off the summer season, according to a report released Monday by the AAA auto club.

More than 41.5 million Americans - including more than 1.2 million Georgians - are expected to hit the roads, rails, seas and skies during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, according to figures released by AAA on Monday.

"The highest gas prices since 2014 won't keep travelers home this Memorial Day weekend", said Bill Sutherland, senior vice president, AAA Travel and Publishing.

In Colorado, the average price of a gallon of regular was $2.75 on Monday, up 9 cents from last week and up nearly 15 cents from the April average.

That's not great news for Memorial Day weekend, because that price hike could start back up again.

According to AAA, the average price for regular gas in OH jumped 15 cents in the past week.

In some part of Mid-Michigan, gas prices hit $3.19 Monday.

States with the highest average gasoline prices: California ($3.68), Hawaii ($3.63), Washington ($3.35), Alaska ($3.30), Nevada ($3.27), OR ($3.23), Utah ($3.18), Idaho ($3.11), CT ($3.06) and Pennsylvania ($3.03).

According to AAA's Leisure Travel Index, airfares are 7 percent lower than last Memorial Day, at an average round-trip price of $168 for the top 40 domestic routes.

That would effectively stifle Iran's oil exports and tip the balance of supply and demand globally, which could contribute to a jump in crude oil prices.

AAA revealed that 36.6 million travelers will drive to their destinations this Memorial Day. The national average for gasoline was $3.66 in 2014 and is now $2.87.

It was ten years ago that the average price at the pump for Americans was over the four-dollar mark, so the three-dollar price may seem to be acceptable to many.

"We expect gas prices to continue to rise well into Memorial Day weekend and toward the beginning of June".
