This season has seen Newcastle re-establish themselves in the top tier, and a win at home to Chelsea from Sunday's final fixture of the campaign should see them secure a top-half finish.

The 24-year-old said: "It has been a good season for me".

Supporters chanted "Rafa Benitez, we want you to stay" during the game.

When Rafael Benitez joined Real Madrid in June 2015, you always got the sense it was a marriage destined for a messy divorce.

Lascelles has played 98 times for the Magpies since signing from Nottingham Forest in 2014 and has helped them keep eight clean sheets this season.

'I would also like to applaud the players, led fantastically by the captain Jamaal Lascelles.

"I thought I had a chance of sneaking into the friendly games but I didn't".

It is not completely out of the question that Lascelles is included in Gareth Southgate's England squad this summer, although it would appear injuries to those now ahead of him in the pecking order would be needed as he has not been called up so far.

The points were far from safe as Maclaren hit twice more and the spoils were shared. I told you before the game we'd go for it and we were 3-0 up.

Rafa Benitez knows that his squad have been very fortunate with injuries this season and the squad needs significant strengthening, the last few months of the season saw Rafa relying on the same 11 players week in week out, with nobody capable of coming in and matching what they could give.

"The main one for me is he is keen to learn, so then you have all the potential".

While Lascelles has still shown he can be caught out of position or make an occasional mistake, like any player, overall his displays at the top level have earned him the recognition of Champions League clubs.

"When you're flicking through Twitter or people say there's rumours about this, that and the other you're aware of it but I don't take any notice".

"I would like to thank Rafa Benitez for his magnificent achievement this season", he said.

"He's a key player for us".

"How? We have to do a lot of things right and to start making the right decisions now".
