The Delhi Police named Tharoor as the only accused in its voluminous 3,000-page chargesheet.

Tharoor, a Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, tweeted that he intends to vigorously contest the charges levied against him. "No one who knew Sunanda believes she would ever have committed suicide, let alone abetment on my part", he wrote on Twitter yesterday.

Though it was a murder probe with the FIR registered under IPC Section 302 (murder), police have charged Tharoor under Sections 306 (abetment) and 498A (cruelty by husband) of the Indian Penal Code. A former foreign and human resource development minister in India's previous Congress party-led government, Tharoor also nearly became United Nations secretary general in 2006, narrowly losing to South Korea's Ban Ki-moon.

Pushkar was found dead in her hotel room on January 17, 2014 under mysterious circumstances. Her marriage to Tharoor was the third one for both of them.

More than 4 years after her death, the special investigation team (SIT) probing the case submitted a draft final report after conducting "thorough professional and scientific investigations" and "legal scrutiny".
