About 8 a.m. Wednesday, an unidentified 19-year-old entered Dixon High School in Dixon, Illinois, and started firing shots near a gymnasium where rehearsal for senior graduation was taking place.

A police officer assigned to a northern IL high school shot and wounded a 19-year-old former student who had brought a gun to the school on Wednesday morning, authorities in the city of Dixon said.

Dixon Police officials credit the officer with saving lives. "Because of his heroic action, countless lives were saved".

"With shots ringing out through the hallways of the school, he charged towards the suspect and confronted him head on", Howell said. "We are forever indebted to his courage and bravery". The suspect shot several rounds at the officer, and the officer then returned fire, hitting the gunman, the chief added.

DIXON, Ill. (WIFR) - Dixon High School says students are being bused from The Armory to Al Morrison baseball field.

Classes are canceled Thursday at Dixon High School, although Seniors will gather again to practice for their graduation ceremony. Dallas most likely prevented a mass school shooting. Officials said all schools in the city about 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of Chicago were placed on lockdown in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

The shooter was arrested near the school and is now receiving medical attention for what investigators believe are non life-threatening injuries. When officers went inside the high school, they said they saw students and teachers barricaded in their classrooms as they should have been. The Chicago Tribune identified the officer who engaged with the gunman as school resource officer Mark Dallas. The officer returned fire and injured the suspect, the City of Dixon said in a Facebook post about the incident.

Dixon police believe the suspect acted alone and that there's no further threat to students or staff, reported.

"In addition to that, we need to take a look at what happened at the school", he said. All schools except Dixon High School were taken off lockdown and resumed normal activity by the end of the day.

Lee County Sheriff John Simonton also lauded the officer's actions, saying he saved an "enormous amount of lives in the school today". They have been going through training on what to do during an active-shooter situation.
