The Mancunian giants finish their season with an FA Cup final date against Chelsea on Saturday and they will be hoping to inflict further misery on their west London giants by securing a record 13th title in the competition.

Veteran midfielder Carrick hung up his boots on Sunday after playing 85 minutes of United's final Premier League game of the season against Watford.

It's reported that United have already fielded a number of loan enquiries for the midfielder - the club's inaugural Manager's Player of the Year victor - with both Burnley, Wolves, Watford and Huddersfield said to be among those keen. "I am going to jump on the staff", Carrick explained. It was the final chance to cut the cloth clean.

Mourinho's current top assistant, Rui Faria, will be leaving the club in the summer to pursue the next level of furthering his career. I am not getting carried away right here'.

Michael Carrick says he's happy to give Jose Mourinho his opinion on Manchester United transfer targets this summer as the Red Devils gear up for a crucial transfer window. Carrick's 464th appearance for United ended in the 85th minute when he left the game to a huge ovation. He joined the club seven months after Roy Keane's departure, inheriting his No. 16 shirt in the process.

His place in Mourinho's backroom staff had already been confirmed, but the Portuguese's revelations that the midfielder is being groomed for the assistant's role will please the United faithful to no end.

But Carrick is aware that his playing career doesn't mean his transition and coaching career will go smoothly.

'Briefly, sure, and I'll do, ' he added. Merci for all you [taught] me, on and off the pitch.

"You've just got to evolve and find a way".

While replacing a player of Carrick's calibre is problematic, the reality is United have familiarised themselves with that conundrum during the season. There will be other players.
