Dee Dee Warwick, who was 18 years Houston's senior, died in 2008, four years before Houston died in a bathtub, which was in part caused by heart disease and drug use, according to a coroner's report.

As for why Whitney never told her mother about the alleged abuse, Jones said she was extremely embarrassed about it. "And she was the person who really intrigued me, and made me think, 'Oh, maybe there is a really interesting film here.' Which is kind of a mystery story, I suppose, because what Nicole said to me was, 'I knew her probably as well as anybody for 25 years", said Macdonald.

According to her family, Houston "was ashamed" to tell her mother of the abuse.

A born talent who regularly blew away the parishioners of her Baptist church in New Jersey with her thrilling voice, Houston was groomed for stardom by her parents, gospel singer Cissy and civil servant John.

Houston's half-brother, former NBA basketball player Gary Garland-Houston, alleges that both he and Houston were sexually abused by Warwick, sister of singer Dionne, between the ages of seven and nine. Houston died in a bathtub at the Beverly Hills Hotel in February 2012, aged 48.

Whitney was made with the cooperation of Houston's estate gives viewers an intimate insight into Houston's personal life and struggles.

"I think she was ashamed", said Ms Jones, adding that the abuse made Whitney Houston "question her sexual preference" - there have always been rumours in the pop world that the star was bisexual - and hide her homosexuality in favour of marrying a man.

Guatemala follows United States in opening Jerusalem Embassy
The Security Council met in an emergency session on Tuesday to discuss developments in the Gaza Strip. Over the weekend, the United States moved its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem .

The late Whitney Houston is receiving the documentary treatment in an upcoming movie titled Whitney, which hits the big screen on July 6th.

"I said, 'Have you ever told your mother?'" Jones asked.

In the film, Jones also says that though Houston's mother Cissy is aware of the abuse now, she refused to tell her while she was alive, saying her mother would "hurt somebody if [she] told her who it was". Some of the people who sat down for interviews include Houston's ex-husband Bobby Brown, Arista Records founder Clive Davis (who discovered her), and Kevin Costner with whom she co-starred in The Bodyguard.

"There was something very disturbed about her because she was never comfortable in her own skin", Macdonald told the magazine. It's because there is this odd absence of her. "And that's certainly what I felt with her", he said. Pictured here with Warwick's sister Dionne.

Her presence is still very much felt and this documentary seems like the flawless, or as close to ideal, representation of her truth.

"I think she will watch the film at some stage, but it's obviously up to her when she wants to do that".
