On the anniversary of Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, US President Donald Trump has repeated claims the FBI spied on his campaign in 2016.

"Congratulations America, we are now into the second year of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History...and there is still No Collusion and No Obstruction".

McCarthy said "there is probably no doubt" that there was at least one confidential informant in the Trump campaign.

After the Times piece was posted, Breitbart News ran a headline that said "Leakers to NYT Confirm FBI Ran Spy Operation Against Trump Campaign".

The New York Times reported separately this week that at least one government informant met several times with Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, both former foreign policy advisers on Trump's Republican campaign.

McCarthy said the FBI could not have spoken publicly before the election about the Trump-Russia investigation, as they did with the Clinton email probe, since it was classified.

Giuliani has been urging Mueller's team to wrap up the investigation now that the probe has reached the one-year mark. When pressed by Chris Cuomo, he said people had tld the Trump team about the spies "off the record - you don't know if they're right or not, they're people who knew a little about the investigation".

"I think what people need to look here at is they didn't have a criminal predicate to investigate people in the Trump campaign they did, and they used their counterintelligence powers as a pretext to investigate the Trump campaign in the hope of making a criminal case".

"It's about time to say enough". Page's meetings with Russian government officials in 2016 have come under heavy scrutiny, and Papadopoulos has pleaded guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation officials about his contacts with Russians.
