DoD Honors Fallen Service Members for Memorial Day

With Memorial Day weekend upon us, the Coastal Bend Veterans Cemetery is asking for volunteers to help honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation.

Bring the family on down to Roger Williams Park Zoo's 4th annual Food Truck Friday at Carousel Village. Various events have been planned throughout the region for local residents and visitors to enjoy. They will be held on Monday, May 28, unless otherwise specified. The Rantoul Township High School band will be part of the service. The service will take place at 9:30 Hillside Cemetery at 13750 County Road 12. The parade will proceed on Rutherford Avenue to the Main Street war memorial across from the Borough Hall.

Following the ceremony, the Byram Township Fire Department will hold its annual Memorial Day Parade.

At 10:00 a.m., the Aurora Legion and Auxiliary will honor all veterans who have served our country. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Legion post on Main Street in Thawville.

Participants will assemble at 10 a.m.

This will be the 151st anniversary of Alton's Memorial Day Parade. Master of ceremonies is Veterans Services Director Michael Ingham.

Coakley said anyone desiring to participate in the parade must be registered to lessen the confusion in planning the marching order.

The city's Memorial Day observance will begin at 9 Bellevue Cemetery, 100 Reservoir St. Veterans Services Officer Jaime Melendez will provide opening remarks, boatswain's mate Donald Silva will be the keynote speaker, and Mayor Daniel Rivera will join him in laying the ceremonial wreath.

Monday, 10 a.m. - Spirit of Iowa Tribute Bell on display at American Legion Post 298, 625 31st St. Rose. A Cemetery Walk will take place at 1 St.

The American Legion Prairie Du Pont Post 485 and Chief Pontiac Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1699 will have a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. The following year, the remembrance was marked in over 336 communities in thirty-one states.

The event will feature live entertainment with music by nearly 20 different artists and special speakers including Ashland Mayor Steve Gilmore, City Commissioner Matt Perkins, State Senator Robin Webb, Commonwealth Attorney Rhonda Copley and more.

Hopatcong Borough's Memorial Day Parade will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 26, beginning at the corner of Hopatchung and River Styx and proceeding down Durban Avenue to Veterans Field.

Following the park service, an open house is held at the VFW Post Home on Railroad Avenue.

10 a.m., Memorial Day service at Conesus Town Hall; guest speaker to be announced and the Conesus Community Choir singing patriotic music.

On Thursday, members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, or The Old Guard placed American flags at the gravesites of service members buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Local Boy Scouts will present the colors of the United States and hold a flag retirement ceremony afterwards.

People unable to march should get into the cars in the St. Attendees should arrive early and park in the Memorial Park lot; buses will transport visitors from 9 1 p.m. Parade entries will begin lining up at 9:30 a.m.

The Wagner-Davis American Legion Post in Roberts will hold a Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. Monday, May 28, at the Roberts Gym. In case of rain, the program and ceremony will be held at Weehawken High School gym at Liberty Place at 11 a.m.
