Newly adopted 1-year-old dies after being left in hot truck

Police in Nashville, Tennessee, say the baby's dad - who is reported to have recently adopted her - forgot to drop off the one-year-old at nursery on Wednesday morning.

Her adoptive mother found the infant in the truck at the family's home Wednesday evening.

The tot was rushed to hospital following the tragedy in East Nashville, USA, but was pronounced dead at Vanderbilt Hospital on Wednesday evening.

Authorities said their investigation would go on through the night.

Nashville has now been hit with a heatwave, with highs on Wednesday of 31C (89F), however, inside the truck, with the windows closed temperatures could have soared to around 48C (120F).

The unnamed one-year-old was strapped in the family auto while her adoptive dad dropped off a sibling at nursery. Jenny Barker called 911 at 5:42 she pulled into her driveway. She was pronounced deceased upon arrival at Vanderbilt Hospital. Over the past two decades, an estimated 37 children have died of heat stroke each year in the United States, according to the website.

"She removed Katera from the pickup truck and began CPR until paramedics arrived", police said. The District Attorney's Office is monitoring detectives' continuing work on the case, but officials said there is no plan to file charges against them. When he returned home, he reportedly forgot the infant in her vehicle seat.
