To be sure, there was plenty of satisfaction and relief among the scores of Weinstein accusers as the disgraced mogul, who has consistently denied allegations of nonconsensual sex, was arraigned sex charges involving two women, including one rape count. Neither victim was named.

The New York Police Department issued a statement thanking "these fearless survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice". Furthermore, his lawyer says his client intends to plead not guilty.

This morning, Harvey Weinstein arrived at the 1st precinct police station in New York City to turn himself in to face charges of rape and sex abuse.

It marked the first criminal case against Weinstein, coming seven months after the allegations destroyed his career and set off a national reckoning over sexual misconduct known as the #MeToo movement.

After talking and writing about the case for so long, including in a recent memoir, "Brave", McGowan, 44, said it came as a huge surprise when news of the legal case finally came.

The books he was holding appeared to be: Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution, by Todd S. Purdum (2018), Elia Kazan: A biography (2005), by Richard Schickel, and a notebook. An associate was carrying them when he left court a few hours later.

NY authorities have been investigating the disgraced producer for months, under growing pressure from Hollywood actresses to bring him to justice, and their probes are ongoing.

His case was adjourned until July 30.

Anthony Bourdain, who is dating Argento, also reacted to Weinstein's arrest on social media.

He appeared in court later and was charged with assaulting Lucia Evans, who told investigators he forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004. A court complaint said Weinstein raped her in a Manhattan hotel in 2013.

In response, Rose McGowan, one of the many women to have accused Weinstein of rape, said in a statement on her Instagram, "I, and so many of Harvey Weinstein's survivors, had given up hope that our rapist would be held accountable by law".

"I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him", she said.

The accusations gave rise to the #MeToo movement in which hundreds of women have publicly accused powerful men of misconduct.

Lucia Evans told the New Yorker in October that she was a college student when Weinstein approached her at a club in NY in 2004. "This is a big strike into the heart of abuse of power, and it shows people worldwide - which is what I was hoping [for] the whole time - that this will not stand". "I said, over and over, 'I don't want to do this, stop, don't, '" she added.

"Mr. Weinstein has always maintained that he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual behavior with anyone", Weinstein's attorney Benjamin Brafman said via a statement.

But for all the media circus, experts warn that any trial - let alone a criminal conviction - would still be a long way off. Twenty years ago, I swore that I would right this wrong.

Weinstein's lawyer is one of America's most celebrated criminal defense attorneys. Some have alleged rape.

This is the first criminal case brought against him since the accusations surfaced in October.

Just last week, actress Asia Aregento spoke about what she says was her experience with Weinstein at the Cannes Film Festival. The grand jury is still hearing evidence in his case.
