Palestinian Islamic Jihad spokesman Daoud Shihab suggested the two killed were members of the organization. When the soldiers tried to take down the object, it was detonated.

Palestinian media reported that the airstrikes hit a number of Hamas positions in the areas of Rafah and Khan Younis. Armed with automatic weapons, fragmentation grenades and several types of explosive devices, they were engaged and killed by the IDF in a combined attack from the sea, ground and air.

The military said the operation was in response to a brief incursion across the border earlier in the day by Palestinians who immediately fled back into Gaza. No injuries were reported in the Saturday morning incident.

Since then, Israel has been preparing for possible attacks by sea by Hamas, especially as the IDF has improved its ability to detect and destroy Hamas tunnels under the fence separating the Gaza Strip from Israel.

It added that the strike was also in retaliation for repeated Palestinian attempts to damage the border fence and "security infrastructure" during ongoing border protests.
