"He. expressed his intention to put an end to the history of war and confrontation through the success of the North-US summit and to cooperate for peace and prosperity", Moon told reporters in Seoul on Sunday.

On Thursday, Trump had called off the meeting scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, citing hostile remarks from the North. Pyongyang responded the following day, saying that it is open to meeting with the U.S. at any time, which then prompted Trump to hint at the possibility of the meeting going ahead as planned.

Moon told Kim of Trump's "firm will" to end the hostile relationship with North Korea and pursue bilateral economic cooperation.

"We have inwardly highly appreciated President Trump for having made the bold decision, which any other USA presidents dared not, and made efforts for such a crucial event as the summit", Kim Kye Gwan's statement said.

"While Washington and Pyongyang have expressed their hopes for a summit through published statements, Moon has to step up as the mediator because the surest way to set the meeting in stone would be an official confirmation of intent between heads of states", Hong said.

Moon suggested that "it is necessary for the two sides to engage in direct talks to eliminate misunderstandings and have sufficient preliminary, working level negotiations concerning the agenda".

Moon, however, said that the process of drawing up a roadmap for denuclearization will not be easy.
