Weather Aware: Alberto makes landfall today, rain continues through midweek

At least two deaths have been linked to Subtropical Storm Alberto as the storm made landfall Monday, NBC News reported.

Subtropical Storm Alberto has gained an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, heading toward expected landfall sometime Monday on the northern Gulf Coast, prompting thousands to evacuate.

In its 7 a.m. advisory the National Hurricane Center said Alberto was at latitude 29.0 north, longitude 86.0 west, or south of the Panama City Beach area.

Swells generated by Alberto will continue to affect the eastern and northern Gulf Coast Tuesday, meteorologists said. Isolated deluges of 12 inches also were forecast as the storm moved inland, threatening heavy rains around the Southeast in the coming hours and days.

The storm's center is expected to move over Alabama on Monday night and Tuesday, the NHC said.

Alberto is expected to make landfall on Monday, with tropical storm force winds already reaching Florida and Alabama Monday morning.

The latest maps from the National Hurricane Center showed the storm at the centre of Alabama at 4am local time on Tuesday, it will then move through across Tennessee and IN on Wednesday.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for an area stretching from Florida's Suwannee River to the border of Alabama and Mississippi. "Strong squalls off and on" had kept her inside, she said.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released the annual hurricane season forecast Thursday in which it calls for 10 to 16 named storms, with five to nine hurricanes. A storm's winds need to reach 74 miles per hour to be called a hurricane.

Saturated soils and small streams will fill quickly adding to more localized flash flooding in those low lying areas.

However, the NHC said the season is likely to be "near or above normal". The way it looks now the remnants of Alberto will produce quite a few clouds, lots of humidity and more numerous showers and storms on Friday with some tropical downpours that MAY lead to some localized flooding.
