Lions, Tigers, a Jaguar and a Bear: Zoo Escape Grips Germany

It is believed the animals escaped for their cages after flooding from a storm overnight.

Two tigers, two lions, a jaguar and a bear escaped their enclosures at a German zoo Friday morning, leading authorities there to put residents of the city on alert in case any of the animals left the park.

Numerous police, zookeepers, and firefighters are combing the zoo looking for the animals before they wandered into the town.

Residents in the nearby are are being warned to stay indoors.

A bear which had broken free from its enclosure was however shot dead, a spokesman for local authorities said.

Five unsafe predators, including two lions, two tigers and a jaguar escaped from a zoo in Lunebach, western Germany.

Exact details of how the animals managed to escape or exactly when they got out were not clear. Part of a local motorway had also been blocked off due to high waters.

Owned by the Wallpott family, the Eifel Zoo in the Rhineland-Palatinate near the border with Luxembourg is home to about 400 animals from 60 species, including a Siberian tiger.

One of the lions was shot dead while the other was eventually brought back into captivity.
