Berlin Cathedral: Police officer shoots man in the legs

Winfrid Wenzel, a police spokesman, said that officers had been called after the man was seen entering the cathedral and waving a knife near the altar.

German police have shot a man said to be "rampaging" around Berlin Cathedral.

A man was rioting in the cathedral with a knife.

The Tagesspiegel newspaper said two people had been injured, the suspect and a man he had attacked.

Armed officers rushed to cordon off the entrances to the landmark.

"Based on what we know so far, we have no information that the suspect in any way had a terrorist or Islamist motive", said a spokesman.

Both the assailant and the officer were being treated in hospital.

The area around the cathedral is typically crowded with tourists and visitors, particularly on Sunday.

The full details of the incident have not been revealed by German police. A Sunday evening prayer service at the church was canceled.
