Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte's spokesman on Tuesday defended the 73-year-old leader from criticism after he kissed a married woman on the lips in front of thousands of cheering Filipinos in South Korea.

"Even if the act was consensual, it was the president, possessed of awesome, even intimidating power, who initiated it", Hontiveros said in a statement sent to Al Jazeera.

President Rodrigo Duterte and South Korean President Moon Jae-In witnessed on Monday, June 4, the signing of memoranda of understanding (MOU) between the Philippines and South Korea at the Blue House in Seoul.

Women's rights group Gabriela condemned the spectacle as the "disgusting theatrics of a misogynist president who feels entitled to demean, humiliate or disrespect women according to his whim".

Although both parties - the president and Filipina Bea Kim - claimed that there was no malice in the kiss they shared, Deinla insisted that the act was "inappropriate and immoral".

A defiant Duterte said the incident was "natural".

Making the rounds also on social media was a spoof photo of the same kiss, but with the woman replaced by superimposed image of China's President Xi Jinping, in an attempt to poke fun at Duterte's high regard for his Chinese counterpart.

Duterte, known for his verbal outbursts and other antics, is being slammed by critics for the kiss, which took place Sunday during a town hall-style meeting with overseas Filipino workers in South Korea.
