Kate Spade's cause of death confirmed amid rumors of alcohol abuse

Her husband told The Times his wife's death came as a "complete shock".

Spade had a scarf around her neck that was tied to a bedroom doorknob, police said.

Andy Spade called his wife the kindest person he knew and said he can not fathom life without her. She was honored twice by the Council of Fashion Designers of America throughout a career marked by cheerful colors and peppy patterns.

In Spade's suicide note to her daughter, she suggested that Andrew would know why she took her life. They moved to NY in the mid-1980s before Kate launched Kate Spade Handbags in 1993. "We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very hard time".

Spade was born in Kansas City, MO, in 1962, and she attended the University of Kansas before transferring to Arizona State University.

Kate Spade's heartbreaking suicide sent shockwaves throughout the world, and some now fear for her brother-in-law, actor David Spade, the younger brother of Kate's husband, Andy. She started the company based on six shapes of bags that she thought every working woman needed. "She was the kindest person I've ever known and my best friend for 35 years", the businessman said in a lengthy statement to The New York Times.

How did Kate Spade die? Spade and her husband sold their remaining stake in the company in 2006 to Neiman Marcus for almost $60 million.

The couple, who co-founded the eponymous brand Kate Spade New York in 1993, were married for 24 years and have one child, 13-year-old daughter Frances Beatrix Spade. And the fashion house she launched in 2016 is also named for her daughter.

The shoe line called "Bella" is described on the Frances Valentine website as being crafted in Italy "from Italian cuoio leather" with the brands' "signature Frances Valentine" jeweled heel. "She went on to sell her business to Liz Claiborne (which later changed its name to Fifth & Pacific in 2012) in 2006". She does not elaborate or share any more detail than to say 'Thank God, I'm cancer free.

On behalf of the CFDA, CEO Steven Kolb and designer Diane von Furstenberg released a statement to say they felt "devastated".

Brosnahan said they had not discussed the subject of divorce, although he did believe some of her sadness derived from having grown apart from her husband.
