Taking Migrant Children From Parents Is Illegal, U.N. Tells U.S.

The UN warned the US regarding its policy and said, "The US should immediately halt this practice". The US is the only UN member state that has not ratified the UN convention on children's rights, but since it has ratified similar conventions, it has a legal obligation to every child in "its care", the UN spokesperson says, calling the separations "arbitrary and unlawful".

Under that policy, parents must be separated from children, and the children are handed over to a separate agency where they are then supposed to be placed in the charge of other U.S. guardians.

Trump tweeted Tuesday: "Separating families at the Border is the fault of bad legislation passed by the Democrats. They should never do that", he told the Hugh Hewitt Show.

Homeland Security officials have since denied that they separate families as part of a policy of deterrence, but have also faced sharp criticism from President Trump for failing to do more to curb the numbers of migrants crossing the border.

In April, Attorney General Jeff Sessions gave direction for all instances of illegal border crossings to be prosecuted.

Shamdasani stressed that children's rights were generally held in high regard in the United States, but expressed regret that it was the only country in the world not to have ratified the United Nations convention on the rights of the child.
