Nobody outside of the production - let alone the writing process - even knows if Cruise's Maverick or Kilmer's Iceman will utter any of their famous phrases, like "I feel the need for speed" and "I don't like you because you're risky".

Val Kilmer is back in action with Tom Cruise with "Top Gun: Maverick", the sequel to the 1986 hit Jerry Bruckheimer production. It also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt in pivotal roles.

Kilmer had teased on Facebook in 2015 that he had been offered the chance to play Iceman in 2015, writing "it's not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script".

"Friends said it's official - #TOPGUN2 was announced today", Kilmer wrote on Instagram. "An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent..." Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion) have revealed that the story "follows fighter pilots dealing with a world in which drone technology is making their old style of flying obsolete". The actor will be reprising his iconic character of Pete Maverick Mitchell.

Val Kilmer is heading back to the skies - or at least to the role that brought him there. It took three years for that deal to solidify, but Paramount will be releasing Top Gun: Maverick on July 12, 2019.
