Lanzini, 25, was looking to establish himself in the national team after an impressive season with Premier League side West Ham United.

Many believed that Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi, who netted 29 goals in Serie A last campaign was a better choice than Lanzini who could only manage five strikes for the Hammers.

Sampaoli originally named a 35-man provisional squad for Russian Federation and will likely select a replacement from the 12 players he dropped for his final group. Lanzini's presence in the squad will be missed but Icardi is more than capable of successfully replacing him. His injury is a blow for Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli who had counted on Lanzini for his starting line up.
