The link-up play between Loftus-Cheek and Rashford on England's right-hand side, causing problems for Costa Rica's defence with the pair constantly fouled as they formed most of the attack - Loftus-Cheek was fouled more than any other player (five) and also completed 100% of his 34 passes.

Gareth Southgate has been given the target of taking England to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Russian Federation by the Football Association.

"It's more hard", Southgate said.

"If we got to the quarters, I think that would be a really good achievement", he added. "I can't start complaining when they do".

Forward Goncalo Guedes staked his claim for a place in Portugal's starting line-up with two goals in the win over Algeria, which missed out on Russian Federation, at a soggy Stadium of Light in Lisbon.

Southgate rang the changes after the hour mark as Dele Alli, Danny Welbeck, Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope were introduced for the home side. "He is still filling out - we sometimes forget how old he is", Southgate said. The Tottenham defender burst forward at every opportunity, helped England keep their shape and was a constant threat, particularly in the first half as the Three Lions dominated.

"But we believe in him, we know the talent he's got".

"You can see that a lot of the lads are confident". It was completely different personnel, different qualities on the pitch, but the same idea and following how the boss wants to play.

England's players were given a final pre-World Cup break after the Costa Rica match, before reconvening on Saturday evening and lining up for an internal match on Monday.
