RIP Yahoo Messenger: Iconic messaging app to shut down on July 17

It's amusing how, many years ago when someone said "messenger" you naturally assumed they meant Yahoo's, and today your brain automatically thinks of Facebook's. Yahoo Messenger, on the other hand, failed to evolve as quickly. Users will have six months after the shutdown to download their Messenger chat history if they so desire.

Yahoo said the company will focus "on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs".

Yahoo Messenger isn't even among the top 50 most used social networking apps on either iOS or Android and the company has struggled in the past to try to make its messaging apps relevant. Verizon is pointing users to its new group messenger, Yahoo Squirrel. That's right: Yahoo Messenger just received a July 17 execution date.

For the first few months, Oath let AOL and Yahoo operate as they did before, but in October 2017 the company announced that it would close AOL's long-running AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) service.

The most popular mailing services of those years like Hotmail and Yahoo have given way to Gmail, though Yahoo mail still has a moderate presence.

But some are still having a hard time letting go of Yahoo's OG chat app. Here's the explanation provided for why the app is being shut down. This gave users the ability to use the service while on mobile devices. That can be achieved through a specific downloader request site.

"After July 17, 2018, you won't be able to access or sign in to Yahoo Messenger".

Enter the email where you want the file sent and click OK. Although the messenger will shut down, your Yahoo ID will still work for other Yahoo products.

Yahoo Messenger also let users add custom avatars, away messengers and music tones for notifications.
