Thousands gather for 'Trooping the Colour' for Queen Elizabeth

As they took to Buckingham Palace balcony today to watch the annual fly-over at 1pm, all eyes were on the royal siblings and they didn't disappoint. Such was the case during Meghan and Harry's return to Buckingham Palace, when she could be seen trying to keep her hair in some semblance of order. She smiled - both at the jets and the children. During the celebration of the Queen's 90th birthday two years ago, footage of Elizabeth herself giving Prince William a talking to went viral.

The Queen ditched the sunglasses she had been wearing since a recent cataract operation, the Daily Mail reported.

"I hope that people watching, that they will just acknowledge it and that they will look at it as a new change in history..."

Trooping the Colour is a longstanding tradition that celebrates Queen Elizabeth II's birthday. It originates from traditional battle preparations, where flags were "trooped" - ie carried - slowly through the ranks so they could be seen by all soldiers, so they could recognise them during combat. That Kate and Queen trip to Leicester came almost a year after her marriage to Prince William.

But later in the day, as the Queen's procession made its way back to Buckingham Palace, Field Marshal Lord Guthrie, a former head of the armed forces, was thrown off his horse near the Victoria Memorial.
